I traveled to India in November during the election period to attend a family event. As fate would have it, the election results were announced while I was in Jammu, giving me a unique opportunity to connect with some remarkable individuals and organizations doing important work for our community. Here are some key highlights from my trip:
Jagti Camp Visit: During my visit to Jagti Camp, I had the privilege of meeting several dedicated volunteers and seniors. I learned about the everyday challenges faced by residents and was deeply moved by their resilience and the progress they’ve made. They proudly showed me the community hall and the facilities they’ve built and maintained for last rites ceremonies, provided free of cost to the community. It was humbling to see how they have come together to create spaces that serve not just as places of mourning but as symbols of unity and strength. I also had the honor of meeting Sh. Pintoo Ji, who, despite not being in the best of health, continues to serve the community with incredible zeal and commitment.
Engagement with Women at HemAth, Jagti: One of the most heartening experiences was meeting the women of HemAth, an organization dedicated to supporting Kashmiri handicrafts. These women shared their remarkable work and stories of resilience, empowering themselves and others through their craft. It was inspiring to see how, through their hard work, they are not only preserving our heritage but also carving out a space for themselves in the larger community.
Visit to the Middle School in Jagti: I also had the opportunity to visit the middle school in Jagti, where I engaged with the children who are full of enthusiasm and a desire to learn. Their eagerness to grow, despite the challenges they face, was a powerful reminder of the importance of providing our younger generation with access to education. It was a joyful experience to witness their curiosity and energy as they shared their dreams and aspirations for the future.
Helpline Humanity: Another key visit was to Helpline Humanity facilitated by Sh. M.K. Bhat. Helpline Humanity provides a library and computer center for community children at Jagti. This initiative plays a vital role in enhancing educational opportunities and helping children prepare for higher education and future job prospects. It was heartening to see how this initiative is shaping the future of the community by empowering the younger generation with the tools they need to succeed.
Meeting with Sh. Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary of Jammu & Kashmir: During my trip, I had the privilege of meeting with Sh. Atal Dulloo, the Chief Secretary of Jammu & Kashmir. We discussed various issues affecting our community, including the need for continued support for displaced Kashmiri Pandits. It was encouraging to see his openness and understanding of the challenges we face.
Meeting Kashmiri Cultural Ambassador: Additionally, it was a privilege to meet the legendary Kashmiri singer Sh. Kailash Mehra Sadhu and the young singing star Sh. Meeru Raina during a family event. I had the chance to hear from both of them about their efforts to preserve and promote Kashmiri music. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to connect with them and learn from their experiences.
Conversations with Panun Kashmir Leaders: My trip also included enlightening conversations with long-time community leaders such as Sh. Vijay Tikoo and Dr. Ramesh Tamiri, who have been champions of the Panun Kashmir movement. Dr. Tamiri’s unparalleled research on the 1947 KP massacre is vital for our community’s understanding of its history, and I was deeply moved by his dedication. I also had a chance to speak with Dr. Agnishekhar, the founder of the Panun Kashmir movement, over the phone, where we discussed the ongoing work in securing justice for our people.
Visit to Vitasta Hospital: I was inspired by my visit to Vitasta Hospital, where I met Sh. Ram Avtar Bhat, the founder, and former bureaucrat Sh. B.L. Razdan, who currently serves as the Chairman. The hospital continues to provide vital healthcare services to the community, and it was wonderful to see how their efforts are making a real difference in improving the well-being of the people in the region.
Gandhi Memorial College: I had the opportunity to visit Gandhi Memorial College, where I was impressed by the recent upgrades to their facilities, including a state-of-the-art auditorium. The efforts being put in place to enhance the educational infrastructure are commendable and reflect the commitment to providing quality education to the community's youth. It was a pleasure to meet with Sh. B.L. Razdan, who continues to play a key role in advancing the college's development and ensuring it remains an integral part of our community’s educational journey.
Sharika Bhawan: My visit to Sharika Bhawan was equally inspiring, where I had the privilege of meeting with Sh. Sunil Thusu, Sh. Sanjay Dhar, and other community members. At this esteemed location, I distributed KOA scholarship checks to deserving children, supporting the next generation of leaders within our community. The efforts of those managing Sharika Bhawan to foster educational growth and provide opportunities for young minds is a testament to the collective spirit of support and empowerment within our community.
KP Volunteers: The KP Volunteers, led by Sh. Vikram Kaul, organized a heartwarming meeting and felicitation event to showcase their remarkable work on the ground. Their dedication to supporting the community in practical ways, from organizing events to helping individuals in need, continues to inspire. It was an honor to attend and learn more about their tireless efforts to make a difference.
Meeting Puneet Jyotshi from Vijeshwar Jantri: During my trip, I had the pleasure of meeting Sh. Puneet Jyotshi who has been instrumental to publish the U.S.-based Jantri for KOA over the past few years. His commitment to preserving and promoting our community’s heritage through this initiative has been invaluable.
Meeting Sh. R.K. Mattoo – I had the privilege of meeting Sh. R.K. Mattoo, a distinguished journalist, dedicated KP activist, and President of the Kashmiri Hindu Cultural Welfare Trust, Bengaluru, whose remarkable contributions to the community in Karnataka have been truly inspiring. Through his impactful work, he has helped raise awareness about the struggles and achievements of our people. His journalistic endeavors have shed light on important issues facing the community, and his efforts have significantly contributed to preserving our identity and fostering unity.
Meetings with AIKS & Other Community Leaders in Delhi: In Delhi, I met with the AIKS newly elected President Sh. Ravindra Pandita and others - Sh. Sunil Kaul, Sh. Maharaj Pajan, Sh. Ramesh Kitchlu, and Sh. Sushil Pandit. Their commitment to activism and preserving our community’s identity is unwavering. Sh. Sushil Pandit, a prominent voice for Kashmiri Pandits, warmly welcomed the incoming Presidents of AIKS and KOA. He shared valuable insights on the pivotal roles both organizations play in advocating for the Kashmiri Pandit cause and emphasized the importance of collaboration to advance the community's progress. I also had a memorable lunch with Sh. Aditya Raj Kaul, where we discussed his impactful work in activism and journalism and explored new ideas to take the community forward. Additionally, I had a meaningful conversation with Sh. Sunil Shakdhar about the early struggles of displaced KPs and our community’s future.
KPL Team in Gurugram: It was a pleasure to be felicitated by the KPL team in Gurugram, where I met with passionate community volunteers like Sh. Ajay Pandita, Sh. Sumeer, Sh. Rajesh Pandit, Sh. Vikesh, Dr. Anish Dhar, Dr R K Jalali, Sh. Pankaj Dhar, Sh. Mitlesh Labroo, Sh. Viren Dhar and Sh. Sanjay Ambardar. They have done phenomenal work in maintaining community bonds through initiatives like their cricket tournament, helping preserve our culture and traditions. I also had the privilege of meeting Dr. Anil Vaishnavi, who has been re-elected as President of the KKS in Gurugram.
Visit to a Gowshala and Temple in Gurugram: My trip also took me to a gowshala and temple in Gurugram, supported by many KPs, especially Sh. Ajay Pandita, who has played a key role in establishing this institution. It was inspiring to see the community come together to support religious and spiritual initiatives that are so important to our cultural identity.
Blood Bank Initiative & Kumbh Mela: Lastly, I spoke with Sh. Ashwani Sadhu, who has been managing the Blood Bank initiative for years and is now working passionately to set up a KP booth at the upcoming Kumbh Mela.
While I could not meet everyone during my trip, I know there are many more volunteers across India whom I would love to connect with as I step into this new role. There are so many unsung heroes, selfless volunteers, and countless individuals who continue to support our community in their own unique ways, whether it’s through direct community service or by supporting their families through difficult transitions. My naman to all of you who feel for the community and do anything for it, no matter how big or small.
As I take on the role of KOA President for 2025-2026, I feel a profound sense of responsibility. It’s a privilege to serve this remarkable organization and community. We must continue to balance the preservation of our cultural importance in the U.S. for future generations while also supporting our less privileged community members in India. The role that KOA plays in bridging these two vital areas is one I hold close to my heart. Many of these programs I visited are supported by KOA over the years, and I take immense pride in witnessing the tangible impact our organization has had on the ground. The hope that community members in India place in us is something I carry forward as I begin this role.
